Trustees OK tax levies for November ballot

MONROE TOWNSHIP — Monroe Township Trustees passed several resolutions at their June 20 meeting that declare intentions for tax levies on the November 2016 ballot for fire protection services and emergency medical services in the unincorporated area of Monroe Township, and for township-wide continuation of Tipp-Monroe Community Services, including recreational and enrichment programs and activities.

The fire protection and emergency medical services levy for the township will be 2.0 mills during a five-year period beginning on the tax lists and duplicate for tax year 2017. For each one-dollar valuation which is twenty cents for each one hundred dollars of valuation would extend from 2017-2021 with collection tax years as 2018-2022. The board decided to combine the existing 1.0 mill fire protection levy and the existing 1.0 mill emergency medical services levy, both due to expire December 31, 2016, and place this new 2.0-mill levy on the ballot that combines both services under one levy. In making this move with the guidance of the Miami County Auditor’s Office and under the Ohio Revised Code, the township will save expenditures by placing one levy on the ballot instead of two separate ones. The board reiterated that although the new 2.0 mill levy is considered an “additional levy,” in this case it actually just takes over for the two 1.0-mill levies that will expire in 2016.

The 0.5-mill levy for Tipp-Monroe Community Services is a township-wide replacement levy in the five-year period of 2017-2021, and covers five cents for each one hundred dollars valuation in those five years. This would be collected in the calendar years 2018-2022. The last replacement levy passed was 24 years ago which carries the 1992 valuation.

Other resolutions passed by the trustees at the Monday night meeting included approval of the township’s 2017 tax budget of $2,235,424.88, payment of current bills totaling $17,370.47, and authorizing a roofing contractor to make a roofing repair at the township building that will cost $1,375.

Reminders of weekly events include the Miami County Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Wednesday through October at the Miami County Engineer Office, 2200 N. County Road 25-A, Troy; and the Tipp City Farmer’s Marketplace on Thursdays from 5-8 p.m. with set-up at the corner of South Third and East Main streets. Another local event will be Monday, July 4, from 4-10 p.m. at the Tipp City Park for Fourth of July activities and fireworks display.

The next township meeting is set for Tuesday, July 5, at 7 p.m. in the township meeting room, 6 E. Main St., Tipp City. The meeting date shifts to July 5 because the township offices are closed on the first Monday of July in observance of Independence Day.
