Road to close

TIPP CITY — Ginghamsburg Road will be closed from 9 a.m. Oct. 10 through 3 p.m. Oct. 31 for a bridge repair through ODOT.

The work, which will close the road 24 hours a day, will be 2,800 feet east of County Road 25-A at the Interstate 75 overpass.

Milton Memories to record

WEST MILTON — A Milton Memories oral history recording session will take place on Monday evening, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. at the West Milton Municipal Building on South Miami Street.

The topic will be the Milton-Union Community Band. The panel will consist of: Alice Martin, Tim Sant, Debbie and Steve Schumann, Connie McCarroll, Belinda Wrght Brame, Jeff Daniels, Sylvia Kress, Jane Gilbert and Scott Hinkle. The recording will be done by Tom Beck.

Haiku poetry contest set

TIPP CITY — Entry forms are available for a haiku poetry contest sponsored by TMCS, Tipp City Area Arts Council and Tipp City Public Library. Forms are available at Tipp Monroe Community Services, Tipp City Public Library and online at

The contest open to children in grades 3-12 and adults. Haiku must have a Winter or Christmas theme.

On Oct. 15, from 1-2:30 p.m. there will be a Haiku Workshop at the Tipp City Public Library. Nov. 7 is the deadline for haiku submission and prizes will be awarded on Dec. 2. at the Community Band concert at Zion Lutheran Church.

Selected haiku will be displayed at the Christmas in the Village Home Tour and in windows in downtown Tipp City.

ACT prep offered

TIPP CITY — Tipp Monroe Community Services will offer an ACT preparation class for high school students. This six hour seminar will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Oct. 12-13 at Tipp Middle School.

Information will help students maximize their scores by covering test format and structure, what content appears on the test, ACT-specific testing and time management strategies. This ACT test-taking curriculum currently is used in over 30 high schools throughout Ohio and is proven to increase student scores.

Tuition includes the book ACT Strategy Smart and subsequent online access to sample questions, answers, assessment, and content-area flash cards. Pre-registration is required.

Art show set

WEST MILTON — The 10th annual art show will take place at Hoffman United Methodist Church on Oct. 14-16 at 201 S. Main St., one block west of State Route 48.

The show will take place in the Activity Center. The purpose of the show is to provide a showcase for area talent of all ages. The show is non-juried. There is no admittance fee and all three days of the show are open to the public. Some pieces may be available for purchase, with the transactions handled directly between the artist and the interested party.

A gift from local arts patron Bill Netzley of Netzley Roofing has enabled Hoffman to offer monetary awards again this year. Awards to be given are: $500 first place, $400 second place and $300 for third place.

Eight additional awards of $100 each will also be presented. People’s Choice voting from all three days will determine the 10 winners. Voting will conclude at 2 p.m. and the winners will be announced and awards presented at 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 16. A silent auction, featuring pieces provided by the artists, will begin during the preview party on Friday, Oct. 14 and conclude at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 16. Friday evening activites, open to the public, are scheduled from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Some of the artists will be present to discuss their work. Saturday hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Annual artisan showcase planned

TIPP CITY — The 11th annual Autumn Artisans Showcase will feature handmade items from local artists, including the fiber arts, photography, jewelry, lapidary, woodcrafts and polymer clay from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Monroe Grange, 4729 Peters Road, Tipp City. There is a little cafe on the premises that features homemade food. Door prizes will be awarded.

Coats being accepted

TROY — The Miami County Sheriff’s Office, along with Sunset Cleaners in Troy, will be accepting children’s coats, in good condition, for distribution to needy children in Miami County.

“Operation Cover-Up” is being offered for the 26th year and we hope this year will be as successful as previous years. Coats will be accepted at Troy Sunset Cleaners and the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.

Coats will be distributed at the Miami County Fairgrounds shop and crop building on Saturday, Oct. 29, between 9-11 a.m.

The deadline for coats will be Oct. 24.

Community Services accepting coats

TIPP CITY — TMCS is collecting new and gently used coats. We are accepting coats for all ages but are especially in need of children’s sizes.

In addition we are taking hats, gloves, scarves, thermals and snow suits. Please make sure items are clean and ready to wear.

Drop off at TMCS until Nov. 4. Our office is located at 3 E. Main St. next to the library. Our hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Coat distribution is on Nov. 5 at the Tipp Monroe Community Services Office at 3 E. Main St., Tipp City. If you or your family is in need of a winter coat, gloves, hats or scarves, hours of distribution are 9 a.m. to noon.

Scholarships available

MIAMI COUNTY — Miami County Foundation reminds Miami County high school seniors and graduates the deadline for submitting scholarship applications is November 1. The Thelma Ross Dalton Memorial Scholarship is for any resident to further their post-high school education in any accredited college, trade/vocational or nursing/health related facility. Miami County Medical Society Scholarship is awarded to a resident who has been accepted into or currently attending medical school and pursuing an approved course of study to become a Medical Doctor (M.D.) or a Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.). Applicant must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, fellowships are not considered. The Marjorie Lyons Netzley Scholarship will be awarded to a resident who pursues a health/medical related degree.

The recipient may qualify to renew the scholarship.

The Miami County Foundation administers and distributes scholarships annually. A committee comprised of Miami County Foundation board members and residents will select recipients.
