BETHEL TOWNSHIP - Although retirement bells were extended to Carla Burton, Danny Elam and Mary Ann Welch for 35, 25, and 11 years of service respectively, they were only retired for the course of the board meeting. Burton, Welch and Elam all sought and were approved for reemployment at Bethel Local School’s Board of Education meeting Monday. Burton teaches social studies, English, and AP classes at the high school. Welch is the library media specialist, serving all grades. Elam is the junior high and high school music director. Interim Superintendent Larry Smith also had his contract extended, ending now in July 31, 2015. "I have enjoyed my time here as interim and am very impressed with the dedicated staff and employees and the very talented students. There is lots of growth potential to deal with," Smith said. |

WEST MILTON – Walking through the halls of Milton-Union High School, or down West Milton’s Main Street, if you heard this, you knew immediately who was talking to you. Hey, how ya doin’, how ya doin’? That was Ed “Big Ed” Lendenski’s well-known opening line. He served as principal at Milton-Union High from 1968-1991, but started out as a teacher and coach there in 1963 (he was actually asked to step into the principal position). After retirement, Lendenski still remained active, running around with his ‘traveling partner’ and oldest daughter, Julie Newman, and her daughter Carly (although she knew him as “Gaga”). He took care of an ill friend, and worked at the Job Center in Miami Valley Career Technical Center (MVCTC) until he got sick in 2010. And Lendenski always stayed a Bulldog. He passed away May 1. |

Ed Lendenski, beloved Miltonian, passed away Tuesday, May 1. This story originally ran in the West Milton Record May 16, 2007, when “Big Ed” was inducted into the Milton-Union Alumni Hall of Fame. By JOYELL NEVINS Record Staff Writer WEST MILTON - “Do all that you would expect someone to do if the student was your child, a brother, or sister whom you loved and they needed your assistance.” Such was Edward “Big Ed” Lendenski’s personal philosophy during his 23 years as Milton-Union High School principal. While there, Lendenski created programs such as Senior Citizens Day, Personal Touch and Teachers are Huan, Too to bolster student’s education and bring the students and community together. “It was a good love affair with the students and the community,” he said. Lendenski received most recognition for the creation of Senior Citizens Day. It started in 1978 with a conversation with Assistant Principal Jim Kinnison. Lendenski noted, “You know what the problem is? Everyone talks about senior citizens but no one does anything for them.” To which Kinnison asked him, “Well, what are you going to do?” |
