TIPP CITY — Rescue crews mobilized to help out an injured canoeist on the Great Miami River near Tipp City on Saturday afternoon.
The Bethel Township Fire Department and Rescue Squad were dispatched to the Great Miami River along State Route 571, between State Route 202 and the east corporation limit of Tipp City, around 5:15 p.m. on the report of a man with an injury.
Lt. Nick Magoteaux of the Bethel Township Fire Department said they were called to the scene and the man was estimated to be “about 50 feet off the roadway.” When they arrived at the scene, the victim was a bit further upstream.
“Due to the conditions of the water and the banks, we had to call for additional assistance from Tipp City,” said Magoteaux, “which was a Gator unit and manpower.”
It took approximately 30 minutes for crews to get the victim to the Gator and make their way about 200 yards west to an area where they could meet the medic unit.
Magoteaux said the victim, a male, was part of a group of canoeists enjoying an afternoon float down the river when the incident happened.
The victim, whose name has not been released, did not appear to be seriously injured.
The rescue was a case where the injury prevented the man from being able to walk out on his own so fire and rescue crews stepped in to see that the man got safely to a medic where he could be taken to the hospital and checked out.
Crews were on the scene of about 45 minutes.
