On Aug. 1, 2011, our family’s world was turned upside down, for it was on this day that our youngest daughter Lisa, was informed that she had Acute Myeloid Leukemia and had to be in Columbus at the Ohio State University, James Cancer Hospital by 6:00 that evening to begin her journey into unknown territories and wondering what the ultimate outcome would be. After months in the hospital, which included treatments, encouragements and discouragements, matches were found. On December 15, 2011, Lisa received a transplant, which saved her life. Five years later she is home raising her three kids and leading a normal happy life. Which leads us to the purpose of this column.
We need your help and are reaching out to the Troy and Miami County community to assist us in saving as many lives as we can for those suffering from blood bourne cancers/diseases. On Sept. 17, 2016, we have been given the opportunity to host an event that will help to save lives. We have teamed with a national organization, Be the Match, to have a 1K and 5K run/walk to raise money to help those in need of these life saving transplants.
Hopefully by now you are asking yourself how can I help. There are many ways you can, here are just a few:
1. You can come to Treasure Island the morning of Sept. 17 and be swabbed and entered in the registry as a possible bone marrow donor.
2. Be a participant in the run/walk
3. Put together a team to participate in the run/walk and racing money to donate
4. Be an event sponsor
Let’s show the rest of the country that we are a caring community and willing to do what it takes to support those in need of life saving procedures.
With a county wise population of 100,000 people, if every person donated a dollar, wouldn’t it be great to put $100,000 towards an effort like this.
