Information provided by the Miami County Sheriff’s Office:

Dec. 31

FRAUD: A West Milton resident came to the sheriff’s office to report a fraud. She received a phone call from Synchrony Financial stating someone had applied for a credit card in her husband’s name in Florida. She told them her husband did not apply for a credit card, nor had he been to Florida. The card was cancelled, and she contacted her bank. She has fraud protection and they advised her to make a police report. They provided her with other resources to help keep this from happening again and to monitor her credit.

FRAUD: A Bethel Township resident reported her debit card being used. She stated someone had used her debit card in the Indianapolis, Indiana area. Her debit card has never been stolen or taken from her possession and she is unsure how it was used there. Wright-Patt bank was notified and they cancelled that card number. Wright-Patt told her she had to dispute the charges to get her money back. She stated this happened on Dec. 18 and she just got her statement. There was an amount of $116.00 used on the card. The deputy advised she could take this case number and pass it on to the bank also she could contact the local police in Indiana. The deputy advised her she could let them know where the card was used to see if they could identify the subject who used it.

Jan. 1

DISTURBANCE: Deputies responded to the 4200 block of State Route 40, Tipp City, for a disturbance. After further investigation Gary Sorrells was charged with burglary and criminal damage.

Jan. 2

WARRANT: A deputy conducted a traffic stop on the listed vehicle at Farrington Road, Piqua. After further investigation the driver was cited for failing to reinstate their license, and a passenger was arrested on a warrant, drug possession and possession of a drug abuse instrument.

SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE: Deputies responded to the area of Windmere and Carousel Drive in Concord Township on the report of a suspicious vehicle. Deputies located the vehicle parked in the roadway in front of 95 Carousel Drive. The vehicle was blocking one lane of travel. Deputies were advised the vehicle had been parked in a driveway on Carousel, and when the caller approached the vehicle, it took off. When it was located, no one was around. Due to the vehicle being illegally parked and blocking a lane of travel, Randy’s Towing responded and towed the vehicle.

DRUG POSSESSION: Christopher Rogers was cited for the stop sign violation at North Dorset Road and Fleet Road, Troy, Rogers was also cited for the possession of marijuana. The evidence collected was booked into the property room of the sheriff’s office.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE: Miami County Sheriff’s Office was advised a car of four juveniles had been stop and detained in Butler Township for smashing mailboxes. It is unknown if the juveniles damaged any mailboxes within Miami County but Huber Heights Dispatch was asked to relay the information in case citizens report damage in the morning.

Jan. 3

PENDING THEFT: On the listed date and time I conducted a traffic stop for an equipment violation. The stop led to a consent search. During the search suspected stolen items from Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Walmart were found. The items were seized, since the vehicle occupants couldn’t prove ownership or provide a valid story for having the items. A receipt was found showing the individuals attempted to return the items to a store, but were declined. The items were booked into evidence at the Miami County Sheriff’s Office. Lowe’s, Home Depot and Walmart will be contacted about the items. This case is pending further investigation.

DRUG OFFENSE: A deputy made a traffic stop on the listed vehicle for traffic and registration violations near Upper Valley Medical Center. After investigation the registered owner Richard Banthem was cited for possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and traffic violations. Banthem and his passenger Brittany Etherington were argumentative and disruptive during the investigation.
