Second Story Secrets returns to Troy

TROY — Second Story Secrets, a walking tour that reveals “what’s upstairs in downtown,” is back for its third year.

The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 4-8 p.m., beginning at the Mayflower Arts Center, Troy. The tour includes a rare chance to step inside 10 buildings and their second floors around Troy’s Public Square — spaces that are otherwise closed to the public. This is an open house style tour where participants can make their way in any order they wish. It is only necessary to start at the Mayflower Arts Center to receive your tour brochure. Tour guides are on hand at each location to give history and information about the building. Returning this year is a Secret Location that won’t be revealed until the night of the tour, but tour organizers ensure that it is a jewel of Troy not to be missed.

The tour features some of the favorites from last year’s event, such as the Elks Lodge, the Coleman-Allen-Saidleman building (a.k.a. Lipp building), and the Mayo Hall. New on the tour will be the First United Methodist Church and their gorgeous stained glass windows, a brand new apartment in the Shaughnessey building, and of course, the secret location. There are expected to be 10 locations total.

An added dimension to this year’s tour is InstallOhio, the brainchild of photographer and resident Mayflower Arts Center artist in residence Timothy Wells. InstallOhio seeks to pair installation art with the unoccupied spaces to bring a new sense of engagement and creativity to the tour. The art on display will only be open to the public during the tour and will feature artists from around Ohio.

Tickets are $25 per person if purchased in advance or $45 for two until Septe. 5. Tickets will be $30 at the door (Mayflower Arts Center). Tickets go on sale July 25, and can be purchased online at, or by visiting the Mayflower Arts Center. There are a limited number of tickets so get yours early. In 2015, more than 300 people took part in the tour.

All proceeds benefit Troy Community Works, a non-profit organization that strives to enhance the long term well-being and livability of the city of Troy by a collaborative approach to sustainable community development.
