Annual beer fest brewing in Piqua

By Belinda M. Paschal -

PIQUA — Ninety-nine bottles of beer on the wall, 99 bottles of beer, take one down, pass it around … and it will only cost you $30.

That’s the going price for this year’s Down The River, Down a Beer, which will take place beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at Lock Nine Riverfront Park in downtown Piqua.

There will be 99 varieties of beer offered for tasting from 6-10 p.m., with representatives from several local breweries including Dayton Beer Company, Warped Wing, Toxic Brew Company, Hairless Hare, Yellow Springs Brewery, and Moeller Brew Barn.

All styles of beer will be available, from lagers, pilsners and stouts to porters, belgians and more. Also, a tasting glass will be yours to keep with your 20 samples.

Organized by Jim Burkhardt, this is the third year for the event, which will benefit the River Stewardship Program and Protect Our Water-Ways (POWW).

In addition to the beer tasting, Down the River, Down a Beer includes such river activities as float time, water safety and canoe/kayak tips, as well as corporate and individual races. River fire rings will light up the night, and local vendors and food trucks will be on hand. Live music will be provided by Jimmy Felts and WPTW, with Tim Wirth emceeing the entire event.

In addition, a silent auction will feature beer-related memorabilia including Down The River, Down a Beer mugs crafted by local potter Bob Heckman. There also will be event T-shirts for sale.

A special feature of this year’s event will be a ceremony in honor of the Great Miami Watershed Water Trail being named a National Water Trail System by the Secretary of the Interior, a designation that could lead to more riverfront investment. The water trail includes the Great Miami, Stillwater and Mad rivers.
