TIPP CITY — This summer, residents can expect to see more special events and incentives at the Tippecanoe Family Aquatic Center.
At their meeting Monday night, the Tipp City council amended the ordinance setting the rates for the pool to allow for special rates and events.
During a study session last month, council discussed ways to promote the city’s aquatic center, including season pass incentives and dollar days. This amendment will allow for these special rates to be implemented.
Dayton Pool Management, which overseas operations at the Tipp City Family Aquatic Center, is also planning special events for this pool season. These include visits from the Newport Aquarium and an opening weekend event with a DJ and giveaways.
The ordinance also changed the pre-season membership discount for families to $21 from $20.
Council also approved the purchase of a new bucket truck at a cost of $215,931. The 2017 lift truck will replace a 2006 unit that has reached the end of its useful life, City Manager Tim Eggleston said.
Council also heard from acting EMS chief Jeff Calicoat about several new community outreach initiatives the department is planning.
The EMS department is planning to provide health screening services for senior citizens in the community, Calicoat said.
“What we’re finding is they’re really not taking care of themselves,” Calicoat said.
In June, the department will set days for the community to stop in at the station for health screening checks, he added.
The department is also looking into starting a safe sleep program for infants, which will hopefully reduce the number of infant deaths in the community.
Calicoat also introduced the concept of community paramedicine, which is an evolving healthcare model in which paramedics provide medical care outside of their usual emergency response and transportation roles.
Council president Joe Gibson expressed some concerns about liability and other issues if the department gets more involved in primary care. Calicoat added that more departments across the country are moving toward this model
