TIPP CITY — After swearing in new members, one of the first actions of the new Tipp City board of education was to set a special meeting to discuss removing the stadium bond issue from the March ballot.
New members Sam Spano, Andrew Venters, and Theresa Dunaway were sworn in Monday night, the board’s first meeting of 2016. Carla Frame was elected board president and Frank Maus will serve as vice president.
The new board called for a special meeting to vote on whether or not to move forward with the stadium bond issue currently on the March ballot. The meeting is set for Monday, Jan. 11, at 6:30 p.m. in the board office.
The previous board voted to place a 0.69 mill bond issue on the March 2016 ballot that would generate $5 million to fund the construction or improvement of the district’s stadium.
“While the stadium is absolutely an issue that needs to be addressed, I’m not necessarily interested in addressing the issue at the same time as us addressing the issue of the new building,” Spano said. “My thought is that maybe we should think about removing that issue from the ballot. I think that it’s not our highest priority at this moment.”
Venters agreed, saying the decision to place a stadium bond issue on the ballot was premature.
“I don’t see how we can be ready to put that on the ballot when we don’t even know the location,” Dunaway said.
According to Spano, the board will need to notify the Board of Elections of their decision before the ballots are printed at the end of January.
The district will ask voters to support a 3.98 mill bond issue in March. This bond issue would generate about $30 million to build a new pre-kindergarten through third grade building on the current Broadway Elementary School site.
This would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $139 a year. The interest rate for the 37=year bond would be 4.4 percent.
In other business, the board voted to advertise for construction management services for either or both the new elementary school and the stadium.
The next regular meeting will be Monday, Jan. 25, at 6:30 p.m.
