PIQUA — A late-Saturday crash on U.S. Rt. 36 has claimed one life.
Lt. Tom Wheeler of the Miami County Sheriff’s Office said that Aubrey Quillen, 28, of Ludlow Falls, lost her life in the crash that occurred just after 11 p.m. in the 4800 block of West U.S. 36, between Spiker Road and R.M. Davis Parkway.
Quillen was eastbound on U.S. 36 attempting to pass two vehicles, according to Wheeler, when she lost control of her car and crashed off the north side of the road.
Witnesses to the crash told dispatchers that there was a victim “not breathing.”
Fire and rescue units from both the Piqua Fire Department and Covington Fire Department responded to the scene. Piqua Police responded quickly to offer assistance until sheriff’s deputies could arrive.
CareFlight was requested but unable to fly due to heavy fog, but it was quickly determined that they would not have been needed as Quillen was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies believe that speed was a factor in the crash but have found no indications of drugs or alcohol being involved. They will wait on the results of toxicology reports before making a final determination. They do not believe that the dense fog played a part in the crash.
U.S. Route 36 was closed in both directions for approximately two hours while crash reconstructionists worked the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.
