CLAYTON — Northmont faced its first true test of the young season Saturday when the Lady Bolts hosted Tippecanoe.

Neither team could find the back of the net as they battled to a 0-0 tie. Northmont’s record moves to 1-0-1 while Tipp is now 2-0-1.

Tipp had defeated the Lady Bolts in the last three meetings between the two teams. Tipp had dealt losses to a pair of tough opponents this season, scoring a 1-0 victory over Troy and a 2-1 win over Carroll.

Northmont opened the season with a 6-0 victory over West Carrollton, so the match with Tipp really put the Lady Bolts to the test. Tipp had the upper hand early, seemingly winning every loose ball. Ten minutes into the contest Northmont began to settle down and the first half ended with both teams taking five shots on goal each.

Northmont held Tipp to three shots on goal in the second half while assailing the Tipp goal eight times in the final 40 minutes.

“A great game. Both teams battled hard and I thought it was well played by both teams,” said Tipp Coach Brandon Baker. “I thought it was well played by both teams. It was very equal. Both teams battled. Defensively both teams are solid. You don’t find the net every game and that is the tough part about this game. When you do find the net it’s fun, but I enjoy these types of games as well. It’s a fun game to watch and a fun game to coach. Northmont is a very good team and that’s why we play teams like this because we know we are going to get battled.”

Even though his team didn’t come away with a victory, Northmont Coach Ted Mergler was glad to see his team assert itself in the second half when the Lady Bolts out-shot Tipp 8-3.

“I felt like this was the first real test for us,” Mergler said. “Tipp City has already been tested a couple of times playing Troy and beating them 1-0 and with a good game against Carroll beating them 2-1. This was our first opportunity to prove what we are worth. To be in a 0-0 deadlock game against a great team like Tipp, we are pleased with the results. Would I have liked to have found the back of the net? Absolutely. I think that our girls settled down and it became a very good match. This was our first time playing at this level this year and I think we played a little scared, but once we settled down and got our composure we started making a lot of dangerous attacks.”

Mergler credited Hannah Cloud with hitting several headers towards the net, one that just missed, and others that set up potential scores.

“If she makes contact inside the box usually you feel pretty good about it, but tonight they just went to their goalkeeper,” Mergler added. “There will be another night and she will come up big for us.”

The Lady Bolts will host Fairborn on Monday, August 31, at Good Samaritan Stadium at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.
