Overfield Tavern hosts historical holiday dinner


TROY — The Overfield Tavern Museum’s board invites the community to experience a “yuletide of yesteryear” during holiday dinners the weekend of Dec. 2-3 at the 209-year-old tavern at Water and Mulberry streets in downtown Troy.

Seatings will be at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2, and at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3.

Bryan Begg of Bakehouse Bread in Troy is preparing the historically inspired, locally sourced menu, which includes an appetizer of roasted corn soup and an entrée of braised oxtail served over mush, beet and turnip greens with a roasted golden beet. Dessert will be a poached pear with molasses candied walnuts.

Each meal includes two drink tickets.

In addition to Bakehouse Bread, sponsorship of this event comes from the Overfield Tavern Museum Foundation; Koverman Staley Dickerson Insurance; and J. Hall and Associates, CPAs, with additional support from Sycamore Spring Clothiers and the St. Patrick Soup Kitchen.

Each seating will feature live musical entertainment and the hospitality of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Overfield, as portrayed by Troy residents Terry and Karen Purke. Servers will be in period clothing thanks to a generous grant from the Troy Foundation, which recently funded a wardrobe for the museum.

The tavern’s cage bar will serve ticket holders craft beer, wine, and spirits, including Staley rye whiskey, made using a family recipe that dates to the early 1820s, when the Overfield Tavern was still operating as a tavern. Craft beer from Carillon Brewing Co. also will be served.

Tickets are $50 each and can be purchased through eventbrite.com (search for “Overfield Tavern Holiday Dinner”) or by sending a check made payable to “Overfield Tavern Museum” and mailed in care of J. Hall and Associates, 327 S. Market St., Troy, OH 45373. Checks should be mailed by Nov. 28, or purchased through Eventbrite by Nov. 30.

“This will be only the second time in the museum’s 50-year history that holiday dinners will be held in the tavern itself,” said Robert Patton, the museum’s executive director. “Our marvelous collection of early Americana from Troy’s settlement period, combined with live music and fine dining by candlelight, will make these dinners a feast for the senses.”

This year’s tavern dinners will coincide with the holiday open house at the Museum of Troy History, which is across the street from the tavern.
