Teen takes top honors for projects

MIAMI COUNTY — The 2017 Miami County Fair has truly been a family affair for Emma Sutherly.

The 13 year-old 4-H member from Troy had the help from her cousin, Josie Shane, 6, for whom she made a dress as part of her “Sewing for Others project.”

Emma twirled her cousin around the modeling stage to show off Josie’s pink flamingo dress she made for church and special events during the Junior Fair Clothing Re-vue on Sunday afternoon.

Josie shared that her favorite part of the project was getting to curtsy for the judges. On Sunday, the cousins won the blue ribbon for the Junior 4-H Clothing Re-vue category, which Josie got to keep.

“It was fun to make a dress not for me. We got to make little belt loops for the bow on the back,” Emma said.

The most challenging part of the project was making the sleeves, which grandmother Bonnie Sutherly nodded in agreement with her granddaughter.

“The little sleeves took three hours to do!” she said. Josie picked out the fabric pattern, which featured bright pink flamingos.

The pair also showed off the dress during the Ohio State Fair last month.

“It was better this year because I could have someone with me that I knew so that made it special,” she said.

Emma’s other prize-winning projects included “Make Over Your Space” and her photography projects, which can be found in the Elizabeth Livestock 4-H booth in the Youth Building on the fairgrounds this week.

Emma was recognized at the Ohio State Fair Sale of Champions for her skillathon score in the market goat as the Outstanding Market Exhibitor for her age division and received a scholarship.

Emma also won Miami County Born and Raised Grand Champion market goat and Reserve Grand Champion Crossbred Doe at the county fair.

Josie is the daughter of Molly and Tavis Shane.

Emma is the daughter of Sam and Laura Sutherly of Troy. She will be an eighth grade student at Miami East Junior High School.
