Mr. Deals to close Friday

WEST MILTON — A West Milton grocery store is closing its doors this week after several decades in business.

Mr. Deals Supermarket in West Milton is closing on Friday, manager Della Smith confirmed.

It was one of two grocery stores in the town of approximately 4,700 residents.

John and Debbie Oman opened the business in the early ’90s.

Smith said she thinks competition from big box stores and national chains hurt the store, adding that the number of customers had decreased in recent years.

“When the dollar store moved in, it put the hurt on us,” she said.

Smith said she is unsure what will happen to the building.

Dollar General opened its new location on South Miami Street last Saturday. It had previously been located further down the same street.

The supermarket was destroyed by a fire on Jan. 4, 2005, which closed the business for more than a year. It reopened in 2006 and held a ribbon cutting on Sept. 1, 2006.
