Republican party plans picnic

TROY — The Miami County Republican Party will host a picnic from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, July 30 at the Tipp City Eagles Recreational Park, 3853 S. Tipp Cowlesville Road, Tipp City

The guest speaker will be Jane Murphy Timken, who was elected in January 2017 to head the GOP in Ohio. Timken is a graduate of Harvard and holds a law degree from American University. She is an attorney in Canton and past vice-chairman of the Stark County Republican Party.

Timken grew up near the University of Cincinnati, where her father was a law professor. Timken’s father taught her to respectfully say, “I disagree,” and then to state her opinion.

Timken graduated from Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati in an area with deep Cincinnati roots blended with residents from diverse backgrounds. In interviews, Timken points out that her siblings often listened to their parents’ lively disagreements about politics.

Timken is married to W.J. “Tim” Timken Jr., president and CEO of TimkenSteel, headquartered in Canton. She was an outspoken supporter of candidate Donald Trump before his election as president. Candidate Trump in turn endorsed Timken to head the Republican party in Ohio. Timken is the first woman to hold the position of chairman the Ohio Republican Party.

As Ohioans prepare to elect a new governor, Ohio Republicans must sort out their top candidates before the May 2018 primary election. Attorney General Mike DeWine, Secretary of State John Husted, Congressman Jim Renacci, and Lieutenant Governor Mary Taylor are actively meeting with civic organizations and conducting telephone town halls to promote their respective candidacies for governor.

After her election to head the Republican party in Ohio, Timken said that her job is to unite the party and serve all Ohioans.

The picnic is open to all interested persons and will be an opportunity to discuss concerns about the future of Ohio. Reservations are requested for the barbecue meal to be served at the event. An adult meal is $15, students $10, with food prepared by Hickory River Smoke House in Tipp City.

For more information or a reservation, contact the Miami County Republican Women’s Club officers Ann Baird at 335-4338 or Stacy Wall at (937) 620-5574.
