TROY — Tippecanoe High School senior Emma Smith is the recipient of the first $500 scholarship presented by the Miami County Gem & Mineral Club. The award was presented at the club’s May 3 meeting at the Hayner Cultural Center in Troy.
Smith plans to use the $500 scholarship to pay for expenses at Wright State University where she will be enrolled this fall as an environmental studies student. Her love of the natural sciences has led her to summer volunteer work at Brukner Nature Center and she hopes to prepare for a career with the National Park Service.
The annual scholarship award is open to all Miami County seniors who plan to pursue careers in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and math) who have GPA’s of 3.0 or higher, and show an active engagement in the earth sciences, including geology, mineralogy, or science education.
In May, Emma will graduate in the top 10 percent of her class and will be within one semester of earning her associate’s degree from Edison State Community College due to her dual academic track of high school and post graduate credits earned during her junior and senior years.
Smith has participated in volunteer activities as a reading mentor with the MORE Program and a shelver and program assistant at the Tipp City Public Library. Her graphic arts and writing contributions to the high school’s creative writing journal, “Inferno,” have promoted and developed that publication’s success.
Emma’s other extracurricular activities include National Honor Society, Yearbook Staff, Anglers Club, JV Tennis Team, Varsity Bowling Team, Dayton Metro Library 2016 Poetry Contest honorable mention winner, and 2017 first place painting winner in the Edison State Community College Diversity Competition for Black History Month.
