WEST MILTON - Historic school buildings have been torn down and rubble has been cleared, yet piles of ideas remain as to what to do with the latest space to join West Milton’s group of parks – the former location of the elementary and middle school buildings on Spring Street.

In wake of this growing dilemma, the city’s parks board brainstormed different ideas they had heard from residents and discussed them briefly at its meeting May 15.

Municipal Manager Matt Kline preferred the brainstorming session over debating which ideas were better than others because that way, all ideas could be out on the table, and the board could start narrowing the list down at future meetings.

Ideas mentioned included a half-mile walking path, splash pad, skate park, dog park, sand volleyball court and a playground set. Other ideas included a baseball diamond, batting cages, a putt-putt golf course and a climbing wall.

WEST MILTON - West Milton Council addressed an emergency ordinance May 14 to amend the 2013 Appropriations due to unexpected expenses incurred. The largest appropriation pertains to the Sewer Capital Improvement Fund.

“There is a drive motor at the waste water treatment plant that is on its last leg and needs to be replaced immediately,” Municipal Manager Matt Kline explained.

Utilities Supervisor Tim Swartztrauber's estimate for the cost of the motor was $30,000. Kline requested an appropriation for $40,00 "to make sure everything was covered.

Council later voted to waive the formal bidding procedures to replace the motor for two reasons.

“One, when the waste water treatment plant was built, that council basically decided what kind of drive motor we were going to have at that tank, so there’s really only one company that can provide that motor for us to replace and two, it is an emergency that it needs to be replaced,” Kline said.

WEST MILTON - West Milton resident Greg Seevers didn’t attend Milton-Union High School, but after living near the school, marrying a Milton-Union graduate and watching his oldest daughter and many in-laws graduate from it, he began to understand the special connection that the West Milton community shared with the building.

It was this connection that led to Seevers, a mechanical engineer by day and a freelance photographer on the side, to consider preserving the school’s memories in a book after learning that it was bound to be torn down. Seevers also attended the last alumni banquet held at the school and overheard several alumni talking about how much the place will be missed. Although a few alums were opposed to the idea of the building being torn down, Seevers continued to look into the project.

WEST MILTON - After failing by a mere nine votes last November, the Milton-Union school levy passed with a much higher 348 vote margin last night.

“It feels really good,” Treasurer Chuck Klein gushed. “We’re really happy right now.”

The 5-year, 10.9 mil-levy got 1,229 votes for, or 58.25 percent, and 881 votes against, for 41.75 percent, according to the Miami County Board of Elections unofficial results.

The renewal levy will not raise taxes, but goes toward general operations of the school.

“We need this renewal to maintain our current level of service,” Superintendent Dr. Ginny Rammel said in an earlier story.

Klein and the school administration extend a thank you to the community for the “continued education” of Milton-Union students.

WEST MILTON – One of the things that has remained the same amidst changes around West Milton is Pearson House restaurant.

“We are still here after all this time, and I think that says a lot,” said Bob Bianco, owner for the past 30 years. “I think the main reason is our food - there’s really an emphasis on keeping things homemade.”

Bianco’s wife, Beth, who can be found hard at work in Pearson House’s kitchen doing the prep work for those homemade items, namely their popular pies, felt it was time to make some changes though.

“She really felt it was time to update the place. It was really starting to show its age and she decided she wanted to have it renovated,” Bob said.
