Old man winter has descended upon us and sent a message to make sure we didn’t forget him after the rather benign weather in 2012. When the winter months settle in many of us have a tendency to burrow in. That’s why this is a good time of the year to grab hold of a good mystery and let those winter blahs drift away. Here are some books by some very popular authors to perk up your winter doldrums.

Diana Diamond: All of Diana’s books are “relative” or should I say about relatives. While she gets some mixed reviews, most are very positive. For instance “The Good Sister”- a satisfying and highly unsettling suspense thriller. “The Trophy Wife” - a gripping page turner with convincing action scenes. “The Daughter-In-Law” - takes sibling rivalry to a whole new level, grips the reader and doesn’t let go.

If you enjoy novels of suspense, then by all means give Diana Diamond a read. By-the-way, she is a “he” and the pseudonym for the New York Times best-selling mystery and thriller writer, William P. Kennedy. Just thought you should know.

Patricia MacDonald: Here’s another writer with a pseudonym. Her darkly hypnotic tales have captivated readers across America as well as in France where she is the No. 1 best-selling author, Patricia Bourgeau. Her first book was the Edgar Award nominated “The Unforgiven” about a young woman who spent twelve years in prison for a crime she didn’t commit. She is ready to start a new life but someone is watching her every move, just waiting for revenge.

James with his family: wife Jody, 5-year-old Alex, 1-year-old Claire, and Homer the dog.

Meet James Willoughby, a Tipp City writer, husband and dad. His column, “A Balancing Act,” will appear in the Herald every three weeks.

Allow myself to introduce…myself. When the opportunity to write this column was presented to me, I certainly didn’t think the first sentence of my first article would be a grammatically incorrect line that I ‘borrowed’ from Austin Powers.

I thought all this great insight into marriage and parenting would spew forth when I sat down to write my first article, yet here I sit channeling the immortal words of a fictional British spy.

I have a stone sitting on the night stand beside our bed. The night stand is on my side of the bed and the stone sits just in front of my alarm clock. Before hopping into bed, I check to make sure my alarm is set and touch the stone.

My mom bought the stone for me at the Yellow Springs Street Fair years before I was married, when the street fair really was a street fair. Mom was someone I could call on a whim to venture somewhere new. We did this many times to check out a museum exhibit, a little festival, or a new small independent business that sparked an interest.

I felt I was the child that didn’t quite fit into the mold that I thought was expected. But, Mom always kept an open mind to my inspired side. When she shopped for presents for me, she said she would pick out the thing that was least like her and knew I would love it.

Walking may be the single best thing you can do to improve your health. It is known to melt fat, increase metabolism, boost energy, help you to feel younger, and increase health benefits. Walking is a low-impact exercise accessible to almost everyone.

Why would you want to start a regular walking program?

1: Reduce your risk of diabetes.
Brisk walking just 30 minutes a day has been found to reduce the risk for developing type 2 diabetes by improving insulin sensitivity.

2: Reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke.
According to researchers at the University of South Carolina, a 30 minute brisk walk, five days a week may lower your risk of suffering a stroke. Regular walkers have fewer strokes and heart attacks, have lower blood pressure, and have higher levels of healthy HDL cholesterol and lower levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol than non-walkers.
